pfSense only need about 2GB of ram (max) to function. I might also suggest that you virtualize everything (assuming you have enough ram in your ESXi host). While doing it this way isn't mandatory for technical reasons, its mainly for people know what that these bits are for the less secure dmz than the higher security business network. On the ESXi box they will use a dedicated interface and a dedicated vSwitch. Technically, for best practice, vSwitch0 should be reserved for management, and vSwitch1+ for everything else, so I'll do that instead. I'll only need one vSwitch in this case, because VLANs will be doing the logical separation. Will I need to do trunking? I know with physical switches, I had to, but how would I do it with vSwitches? I will have to set up VLANs on the pfsense side, then on the physical switch side, and finally on the ESXi side, if I understand my VLANs correctly. Unfortunately I am dumb and forgot to enable SSH on the physical (blue) switch, so I can't assign VLANs to the connected ports until Monday (I'm doing all this through VPN currently). Not without some form of inter-LAN routing. I realized after giving 10.10.1.1/24 to the web server that it can no longer talk to the pfsense default gateway at 192.168.24.1. But it can be done easily with what you have already built. If you want to go this route it will take more explaining. Then connect your servers to vlan for servers and clients to the vlan for clients.

On the ESXi side upgrade your vSwitch0 to support two vlans. On the link that goes between pfsense and the server vSwitch 0.

If your pfsense box has only 2 interfaces, then jump into vlans.

Update the dhcp-relay to listen on this new interface then create the scope on your dhcp server that matches this new subnet. Option 2, If you have another nic port on your pfsense router then you can just duplicate what you setup for the server network and give the workstation network its own IP address range like 192.168.32.0/24. Your static addresses will be 192.168.24.1 to 192.168.24.63 to use for what ever you need like server, switches, printers and such (I realize this is for a project, but you need to think about all of these bits too).

If you want a single subnet where both your servers and client reside, just setup your dhcp pool so your clients are given IP addresses starting at 192.168.25.64 up to 192.168.24.252. Its recommended for server to have a fixed and assigned IP address.ĭepending on your environment and security requirements, it is totally logical to place your workstations on a different subnet than your servers. If for some reason your server can't reach the dhcp server on boot, you won't be able to contact that server until you reboot it. And actually if this was a real production environment I would not assign server IP addresses by dhcp reservation. Without dhcp reservation that new server will just pick up an IP address from the pool (probably not something you want to do in a production environment). The clients connected to that vswitch will pick up the dhcp address, there is nothing to do unless you want to do dhcp reservation. If your router has dhcp-relay enabled it will then pass the dhcp requests to the dhcp server. All devices on that same vSwitch are on the same subnet. The vSwitch can be setup just like an unmanged switch.

Typically you don't give the vSwitch an IP address unless you want your esxi box to have a presence on that network (I would recommend not doing this if the dmz network was a real one).
